Construction for the new $11 million National Isolation Centre (NIC) in Tutong, dedicated for the treatment of COVID-19 has been completed, with its opening officiated in a ceremony by Minister of Health, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Md Isham Hj Jaafar.

The new centre began construction on March 27, where LSL Sdn Bhd was appointed by Ministry of Development (MoD) for the construction of the new building which cost about B$11,317,514.

Built on a 6,000 square metre site not far from the existing NIC, the establishment of the new centre was in response to the growing demand for the Ministry of Health (MoH) to effectively treat and monitor patients that have been infected by the coronavirus.

According to a press statement by MoH, the new centre comprises of seven main blocks; five blocks (Block A-E) will be used for the treatment of patients who require a clinical setting while the remaining two blocks (Block F-G) will be used for administrative and engineering purposes.

The new centre is also equipped with new medical equipment as well as other facilities and amenities that include 160 beds for the isolation wards and six ICU beds; a pharmacy; a medical equipment room; a gowning and de-gowning room; and sluice rooms, among others.

The event also saw the handover of the building key by Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Ir. Hj Suhaimi Hj Gafar to Minister of Health YB Dato Dr Hj Md Isham.

Following the handover ceremony, the ministers had a tour of the facilities to further examine the functions of the new isolation centre.

The event concluded with a tree-planting ceremony which was participated by both ministers along with fellow doctors and members of the Public Works Department (JKR) project team.

Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Development Dato Seri Paduka Architect Hj Marzuke Hj Mohsin, Permanent Secretary at MoD, Ir Hj Amer Hishammuddin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Zakaria, Permanent Secretary (Corporate and Law) at MoD, Sr Hjh Norhayati Hj Mohd Yaakub, Permanent Secretary at MoH, Hj Abdul Manap Othman, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Management) at MoH, Hj Maswadi Hj Mohsin and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at MoH Dr Hj Zulaidi Hj Abd Latif.
