Grand Motors, the exclusive distributor of Kia vehicles in Brunei, recently introduced the all-new Kia Sorento – more powerful, progressive and versatile than its predecessor.
The fourth-generation Sorento has really raised the bar in the SUV segment in terms of efficiency and quality.
It sits at the heart of Korean automaker’s reinvigorated global SUV line-up, which also includes the Seltos, and Sportage. It is the first vehicle to be based on Kia’s new-generation midsize SUV platform.
Refined boldness and beauty
The Sorento is definitely a head-turner on the road; based on the design concept that defines ‘refined boldness’, the Sorento is the perfect balance of beauty and the beast.
At first glance the seven-seater which also comes in six seats still retains its signature tough-looking aesthetic but enhanced with a greater degree of refinement, creating an elegant yet sportier design.
The eye-catching design incorporates sharp lines and creases – noticeably more sculpted than its more round-edged predecessor.
In addition to that, with more contemporary geometric details and more swept-back, elongated proportions, the result is a more confident, more mature and more desirable design than ever.
Moreover, viewed from the side, the car sports muscular curves on its front and rear fenders.
Its pronounced shoulders above the rear wheel arches underline the SUV’s robust character giving an aggressive and assertive appearance.
The smooth design language flows perfectly through its polarising ‘tiger-nose’ grille which is further highlighted by its ‘tiger eyeline’ LED lights, giving the SUV a sharper edge.
The SUV is available in 10 stunning and earth-toned colours; Clear White, Snow White Pearl, Silky Silver, Platinum Graphite, Essence Brown, Gravity Blue, Steel Gray, Runway Red, Aurora Black Pearl and Mineral Blue.
In addition to that, the choices of 18- and 19-inch aluminium alloy wheel designs complement the athletic and predatory character of the SUV.
Inside the Sorento
The all-new Sorento is paired with a larger body to maximise cargo and luggage space; it is one of the most versatile and spacious three-row SUVs on the road.
The upscale cabin of the Sorento impresses with its premium-quality materials, cutting-edge infotainment technologies and a striking new design.
Aside from easy-to-spot high-quality materials, at the heart of the cabin is the 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, followed by 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation system at the centre of the dashboard.
The centre console and layout has a clean design and accessibility making it easier for the drivers to be connected and in control.
Moreover, the display audio system is also available with infotainment systems that enable full, seamless smartphone integration compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto.
The seven-seater features best-in-its-class spaciousness and versatility that has characterised the Sorento over its 18-year existence.
The SUV is wider, taller and boasts a longer wheelbase than its previous predecessors which means extra space inside the cabin.
The model provides both the driver and passenger ample space for headroom and legroom.
Furthermore, the seats are nicely sculpted for both the driver and passenger’s comfort and high-seating position that give the ultimate SUV feel to it.
Not only that the second row can be configured into two separate foldable seats with armrests, or a 60:40 split-folding row of three seats.
The Sorento also offer extra cargo capacity by activating the second and third-row fold-down seats with a single press of a button.
Technology and Safety
When it comes to technology, the all-new Kia Sorento has a wealth of innovation that provides every passenger with a peace of mind.
The family SUV comes equipped with innovative and safety functions which offer the ultimate confidence and maximum comfort in all journeys.
All variants and specification come with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Down-Hill Brake Control (DBC), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Trailer Stability Assist and many more.
Depending on specification, the ADAS range in the new Sorento includes Kia’s latest Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), Surround View Monitor (SVM), and Driver Attention Warning (DAW).
Power and Performance
As for performance, the all-new Sorento delivers a refined and composed journey.
It boasts a wide range of sturdy powertrains, from the base model’s Gasoline 2.5 MPi to the high-performing Smartstream D2.2 diesel engine.
The Bruneian team had a chance to test out the 2.5L MPI Gasoline that provides the perfect amount of power for our drive from the Favoureat Kopitiam in Berakas to Batu Satu.
During our journey, the Sorento settles down impressively at high speeds on the Berakas Highway.
Not only that, the seven-seater provides an enthusiastic acceleration combined with impressive sharp handling and agility on the road.
During the tight curve road at the end of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah highway, the SUV stayed level throughout the turn with little body roll.
The SUV handles well around corners, with its confidence-inspiring steering and accurate response.
Throughout the journey, the Sorento was perfectly stable and composed which inspired confidence from behind the wheel.
The overall impression is that the Kia Sorento satisfies both in its style and everyday practicality. It is comfortable, versatile and easy to drive, perfect for long journeys with a big family.
