BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
The Brunei Darussalam Capital Market Association (BMCA) launched its website yesterday which will serve to promote capital market investments in Brunei.
The website (www.bcma.org.bn) archives all related studies and findings made by the 10-member group and can be accessed by the public, as it is aimed at providing knowledge and financial tips to potential investors.
A capital market is a financial market where long-term debt and equity-backed securities are being traded. Key products include mutual trust funds, fixed income investment, bonds, company stocks and company shares.
Brenda Low, CEO of Standard Chartered Securities (B) – a member company – said showcasing these materials online is crucial because Brunei’s capital market is still in its infancy with only a limited range of products available to the public.
She however pointed that with Brunei getting more robust in starting up businesses, more people have warmed up to products in the capital market and there is a strong potential for it could grow.
“So as we progress, there will definitely be more products introduced by the member companies to the market.”
“But for now we have to work on educating the public so they could be more financially literate when they make investments,” said Low.
The website will also serve to inform the public on any activities, including the stock and investment challenges which the BCMA has actively arranged since its inception last year.
The association itself draws its credibility from its members, which consisted of renowned fund distribution firms and asset management companies that include Standard Chartered Securities (B), Baiduri Capital, CIMB Investment Bank, SBI (B), UOB Asset Management (B) and Lion Global Investors Limited.
Launching the website on the sideline of the Asia Asset Management 13th Annual Brunei Darussalam Roundtable at the Empire Hotel & Country Club was the Minister of Home Affairs, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong.
