Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and its group of subsidiaries recently performed its obligation as a business by handing over its Zakat (tithe) on Business for the financial year 2020, along with Zakat for customer deposits to the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

BIBD’s Zakat on Business for the Financial Year 2020 amounted to $1,894,504.82 whilst Zakat for customers deposits for the period of May 2020 – April 2021 came in at $592,132.17.

The Zakat was derived from obligations paid by the bank and its customers and in order to help Muslim customers meet the obligation, BIBD has provided customers with the convenience of paying their Zakat for customer deposits at all branches nationwide.

The Zakat were handed over by Assistant Mufti (Buhuth) of the State Mufti Office Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mazanan Haji Yusof, as the Chairman of Shariah Advisory Body of BIBD to Minister of Religious Affairs (MoRA) Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, in his capacity as MUIB President.

Also in attendance were BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mubashar Khokhar, other MoRA senior officials as well as members and personnel of BIBD and the BIBD Shariah Advisory.

The event took place at the Ministry of Religious Affairs building in Berakas.

Being one of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat payment is a method of purifying and distributing wealth, supporting those in need as stipulated by Shariah.

In order to also help its Muslim customers meet this obligation, BIBD has provided its customers the convenience to pay their Zakat for customers’ deposits as its branch counters in Brunei Darussalam.

As Brunei’s ‘Partner in Progress’, BIBD has partnered up with MoRA in enabling members of the public to pay their zakat fitrah digitally through BIBD QuickPay. – Analisa Amu
