The Brunei Information Communication Technology Awards (BICTA 2020/2021) has officially been launched and registration is open, with this year’s theme being ‘Smart Nation Through Digital Transformation’.
This was announced by the Ministry of Transport and Info-Communication (MTIC) during a press conference held at the Design and Technology Building’s auditorium in Anggerek Desa.
Speaking during his opening remarks, Permanent Secretary at the MTIC Hj Mohd Nazri Hj Mohd Yusof explained that the theme highlights the importance of digital technology in developing the socio-economy.
It also aims to enrich society with skills and knowledge necessary for a digital economy therefore BICTA, he added, is an initiative that aims to stimulate technological innovation and entrepreneurship among individuals, students as well as businesses.
“Through BICTA, innovative products and solutions can be produced, which not only meet local needs but are also responsive and in line with current trends and technological developments,” he continued.
“Additionally, the BICTA Plus Bootcamp was also launched in December 2020, specifically to help BICTA participants strengthen their business plans, improve the development of market-ready products and prepare them for the BICTA competition,” continued the permanent secretary.
The boot camp will run for seven months until June 2021 under the guidance and mentorship of industry experts. Registration for the boot camp is still open.
BICTA 2020/2021 will feature three main categories; namely the ICT Industry Category for start-ups, companies and government entities, the Tertiary Category for students in Year 12 up to undergraduates and the School Category for students from Year 7 until Year 11.
Winners for the above category will receive cash prizes of $10,000, $7,000 and $3,000 respectively.
Five Special Awards will be presented at the event namely; Research and Development Project, Big Data Analytics Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology, Internet of Things (IoT) and Start-Up.
First place holders will have the opportunity to represent the sultanate in the Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) 2021, slated for the end of this year to compete with other participants from the Asia-Pacific, depending on the state of the pandemic in the region.
BICTA is organised jointly by MTIC, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and the InfoCom Federation of Brunei (IFB).
