Registration for the Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA 2020) is now open, announced the Ministry of Transport and Info-Communication (MTIC) during a press conference held at the Design and Technology Building’s auditorium in Anggerek Desa.

BICTA 2020 which carries the theme “Smart Nation Through Digital Transformation” will be focusing on the development of new disruptive technology for the digital transformation of the society and economy in line with the nation’s agenda of achieving a Smart Nation.

Speaking during his opening remarks, Hj Mohd Nazri Hj Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at MTIC explained that BICTA is part of the government’s ongoing effort in stimulating technological innovation and creativity in the sultanate.

“It serves as a benchmark for the development of ICT products by establishing a platform for competition and recognition for ICT innovation and creativity in this country,” he added.

BICTA 2020 will feature three main categories namely the ICT Industry Category open for start-ups, companies and government entities, the Tertiary Category open for students in Year 12 up to undergraduates and the School Category for students from Year 7 until Year 11.

All categories are open to individuals as well as groups, and each winner for the above categories will receive cash prizes of $10,000, $7000 and $3000, respectively.

There will be also five Special Awards that will be presented at the event namely Research and Development Project, Big Data Analytics Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology, Internet of Things (IoT) and Start-up.

Additionally, BICTA 2020 is the year of the Royal Patron Award which gives recognition to the best out of the best overall winners for the competition and will be presented during the BICTA 2020 Awards Ceremony slated for later this year.

The Royal Patron of BICTA is His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.

“I encourage individuals, students and representatives from the ICT industry to participate in the BICTA 2020,” continued the senior official.

“The winners, especially for first place holders will have the opportunity to represent the sultanate in the Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) held in November at Penang, Malaysia to compete with other participants from the Asia-Pacific region”.

BICTA is organised jointly by MTIC, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and InfoCom Federation of Brunei (IFB), supported by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) and BruIPO.
