The Ministry of Transportation and Infocommunications (MTIC) has officially launched a pilot project to promote and create awareness on accelerating 5G adoption in the sultanate, with five 5G Proof-of Concept network environments identified.
The 5G pilot project, which is deployed as commissioned by the MTIC and spearheaded by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) kickstarted with a launching ceremony at The Mall, Gadong last week.
This project is a continuation of a series of activities to raise awareness on 5G technology which has the potential to improve productivity, enhance virtual experiences and bring the country to the next level of digitalisation.
The Mall, Gadong is one of five strategic locations where the 5G pilot project and Proof-of-Concept networks are being deployed along with outdoor coverage sites including the Airport Mall, Mulia Hotel and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) as well as another indoor coverage site at the Design and Technology Building.
These network environments, according to the AITI will be implemented through phases.
Speaking during the launch, AITI Acting Chief Executive Ir Hj Jailani Hj Buntar highlighted how adopting 5G technology is not merely about having a faster network but about establishing “new global wireless standard of speed, troughput and bandwidth”.
“5G is about tomorrow, so we need to prepare ourselves for the journey ahead by addressing any current issues at hand,” he continued.
In light of this, he added, a series of pilot projects will be organised in an effort to create and propose active 5G use cases such as the one situated at the lobby of The Mall, where up until 7 April the public can experience the significant improvements that 5G can bring.
Speaking of the development of adopting 5G technology in the sultanate, Hj Jailani proceeded to outline the progress made since the establishment of the Brunei Darussalam 5G Taskforce last year, which currently consists of 110 members from 41 organisations, both public and private.
He mentioned the 5G Seminar which was held in January of this year that held the theme “5G: Enabling Digital Transformation”, adding that the seminar was aimed at exploring the economic impact and opportunities that came with the advent of various 5G emerging applications.
“Other activities implemented were the National 5G survey, UTB’s International Conference on Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (CIIS), the 5G Taskforce website, 5G awareness video, the setup of the 5G Innovation Lab in UTB and workshops to explore potential use cases with several industry verticals such as the health sector, oil and gas as well as tourism,” he went on to say.
During the event, a handover ceremony was also held where in collaboration with the AITI, the Brunei Darussalam 5G Taskforce handed over their 5G Taskforce Report to the MTIC Minister, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Abdul Mutalib POKSSDP Hj Mohd Yusof who was present to launch the pilot project.
Also in attendance were Acting Minister of Energy and Chairman of AITI, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Matsatejo Sokiaw, Legislative Counci memberl and Member of Authority of AITI, Yang Berhormat Siti Rozaimeriyanty Dato Seri Laila Jasa Hj Abd Rahman, 5G Taskforce Chairman; Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries, AITI Members of Authority, Directors, CEOs, Brunei Darussalam 5G Taskforce Working Group Chairmen and its members. – Wardi Wasil
