Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) is joining forces with hotels and restaurant through Brunei Gastronomy Week in the efforts to promote culinary tourism in the sultanate.
Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali Apong in his opening speech at the launching ceremony said that hotels and restaurants play a major role to further develop Brunei’s gastronomy identity
“Gastronomy is a major driver for tourists when choosing a destination, ” he said.
He added: “Tourists wish to experience the local taste in the destinations and accommodation facilities have prepared the ground for development of gastronomy tourism”.
The third edition of Brunei Gastronomy Week which will take place until March 10 aims to promote boost tourism and showcase Brunei’s cultural excellence in gastronomy.
Chefs from various restaurants and hotels will be participating in the culinary event, creating experimental dishes with the themed ingredient “Tumeric”.
He also hopes that the event would encourage more hotels and restaurants to further improve and elevate the presentation of Bruneian cuisine.
At the opening ceremony of the Brunei Gastronomy Week, guests were treated to various food samples that were prepared using turmeric (kunyit) by the participating chefs.
Some of the food items include De-Constructed Laksa by Radisson Hotel, Trio Duck served with tumeric sauce by Anjung Saujana and Udang Sambal Kunyit by the Longhouse Training Restaurant, among others.
The opening ceremony also saw a presentation of awards to winners of the Brunei Gastronomy Week 2018.
The winners were awarded for the Best Taste, Best Wholesomeness, the Best Presentation; Most Creative and the Most Innovative.
The Rizqun International Hotel was awarded for both Best Taste and Best Wholesomeness.
Junior chef of Rizqun International Hotel Nurul Amal Junah said the winning recipe for the last year’s Gastronomy Week was a collaboration among six chefs.
This year, the hotel is turning it up a notch and bringing the heat, featuring variety of innovative food recipe.
She further added that the hotel is hoping to win more awards for this year’s Brunei Gastronomy week.
