Brunei is sending 87 athletes to complete in 14 sporting events at the 30th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games, which will be held in the Philippines from November 30 to December 11.
The 14 events include several sporting areas where Bruneian athletes have performed well since the last SEA games. They are Pencak Silat, Wushu, Takewondo, Karate-do, Fencing, Football, Netball, Lawn Bowls, Tenpin Bowling, Polo, Golf, Billiards, Aquatics and Athletics.
Besides athletes, the Bruneian contingent to the Philippines also includes 45 coaches and technical officers, eight managers and 20 secretariat officers.
This was announced in a recent press conference led by the Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal Pengiran Haji Mahmud.
Panelists at the press conference include President of Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah and MCYS Minister Yang Berhormat Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin.
Also present was the second Vice President of BDNOC Haji Muhd Zamri Dato Paduka Haji Hamdani as the Chef de Mission of Brunei Contingent to the Philippines SEA Games and Secretary-General of BDNOC Haji Zuraimi Haji Abdul Sani.
Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal said that athletes to represent Brunei in the upcoming SEA games have already been preparing themselves since 2018, especially through participation into several sporting events including the Arafura Games.
Intensive training started from August 2019, the permanent secretary said, adding the athletes had also been entered into warm-up games and trials held within and beyond the country’s borders.
Several athletes were previously awarded scholarships to hone their skills overseas; while some were given training from overseas experts on how to improve their skills.
The Brunei Polo team whose line-up includes HRH Prince Abdul Mateen, HRH Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah and HRH Princess ‘Azemah Nikmatul Bolkiah was also brought into warm-up games in Spain and Thailand.
Brunei’s Netball Team whose members include HRH Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah also had its intensive training in Melbourne and Singapore recently.
The 30th SEA Games, which is managed by Philippines SEA Games Organising Committee (PHISGOC), will stage 56 sports in 530 events. Close to 10,000 athletes from 11 countries are expected to participate in the biennial sporting event.
