Cambodia’s first match of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy kicked off against Lao PDR at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last night.

First chance came to Lao PDR with a quick counter, but the shot by Kaharn Phetsivilay was saved by the Cambodian goalkeeper.

Cambodia’s Sos Suhana scored the first goal in the 15th minute after Lao PDR’s goalkeeper misjudged a low cross leaving Sos Suhana with an empty net. Lao PDR responded quickly with a strong header on goal by Somxay Keohanam but the ball went straight to the goalkeeper.

Lao PDR equalised through their captain, Phithack Kongmathilath, in the 69th minute with a thunderous left foot outside the penalty box. Sos Suhana again nearly put his side in front in the 86th minute, but his shot was inches wide.

Phithack Kongmathilah was on the scoresheet again after Lao PDR’s substitute Seut Baraing fouled him with a high boot just outside the box. The freekick taken by Cambodia’s captain flew into the top corner, making him the tournament’s top scorer with 3 goals. Full-time score was 1-2 to Lao DPR.

Despite Cambodia’s loss, they still have a chance to qualify for the semi final if they can beat Singapore on 30th April at the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex.
