Calling all boba tea lovers — the popular Malaysian franchise, Chatto has now arrived in Brunei.

The newest player to the country’s emerging boba scene opened its very first international branch at the ground floor of Majid Mohamad Building at
Jalan Pasar Gadong, just right behind the Arch.

The breath of fresh air; Chatto is more than just boba tea, the Japanese-inspired tea bar focuses on healthier and premium beverages.

Healthier choice

The difference is that while most boba teas are found to have high levels of sugar, Chatto wants to change that by offering drinks that are less sweet with 30 per cent being its standard sugar level.

“With the growing number of people who are now more health-conscious, Chatto sees the importance of providing less sugary beverages into the market,” said Chatto Brunei’s franchise owner Alvin Ng, adding that the franchise controls the sugar level of its beverages to make sure customers can enjoy their drinks in a healthier way.

“Chatto offers premium tea which is directly imported from Japan, Taiwan and China. We ensure the taste of their beverages are always of top quality and up to standard,” said Ng.

The group of four longtime friends turned business partners has tried over five different Boba tea brands before opening up Chatto.

During their travel in Kuala Lumpur, they came across the franchise and was impressed by the quality of drinks and menu.

“We felt that Chatto was unique from other boba tea outlets. Most of their drinks are made with fresh and natural ingredients and healthier than the usual bubble tea,” added Ng.

Chatto has been operating since 2017 and according to him, the franchise has 40 locations in Malaysia alone.

Chatto Brunei began its soft opening on June 3 while Ng initially wanted to get things up and running early this year, but the COVID-19 outbreak has put those plans on hold.

“When COVID-19 first started, it delayed most of our operations – from the shipping of ingredients and also our trainer from the Chatto headquarters were unable to attend so we had to learn all the procedures from making the drinks via Zoom,” he explained.

“We are forced to improvise with what we have, however maintaining the integrity of our beverages by making quality and freshness a priority for our quality,” he added.

Inside Chatto

Upon entering the outlet, customers are greeted to a minimalist sun-soaked interior. Their striking signature green colour and decorative foliage wallpaper juxtaposed with the mellow white decor creates a very calming and relaxing atmosphere.

Apart from the picturesque view, the cafe is the perfect spot to hang out with friends or to bring your laptop to work, with its comfortable seating and quiet space.

According to Ng, the decision to have the new store in Gadong is also owing to its strategic location nearby a populated and highly dynamic residential and business area

Chatto’s stars

The brand introduced six thirst-quenching menus that will satisfy your tea cravings namely; their Signature Series, Milk Tea Series, Latte Series, Specialty Tea, Pure Tea Series, Super Brown Sugar Tea Series.

The star of the show is none other than their signature Charcoal Oolong Pearl Milk Tea – an Instagrammable concoction that is refreshingly smooth and light with a robust and earthy flavor to it that gives the drink a harmonious taste.

Another fan-favourite is the White Pearl Hojicha. The deep taste of the full-bodied aromatic roasted green tea combined with fresh milk gives off a surprisingly sweet, rich nutty caramel-like flavour which is best served unsweetened.

For Ng, his personal favourite would be the Caramel Organic Oolong.

“The delicate fragrant Oolong balanced with a caramel sweetness is just perfect,” he said.

Chatto encourages the standard sugar level for their beverages to be at 30 per cent so customers could enjoy the natural flavour of the tea, however, customers can still choose between having no sugar at all to extra sweet.

For those who are looking for something savoury, Chatto offers a wide range of their house-made sandwiches such as their hot-selling Kimchi Tempura Prawn Sandwich and Teriyaki Fish Fillet Sandwich, among others.

Aside from that, Chatto will also be extending its seasonal menu in the future.

In addition, when asked about future plans for the franchise, Ng said that they are eyeing on expanding the brand in the country by opening more branches in the future.
