Calling all creatives! It is time to ring in this new year with a new hope by getting creative for a cause.

Local creative media marketing and events management company, the Blue Raincoat Collective is on a nationwide search for artists and designers to take part in upcycling 101 discarded school desks and chairs.

A sort of creative “community giveback” project, 101 Tables aims to donate the upcycled set of tables and chairs to the underprivileged children who live in Kg Bolkiah B, Kg Ayer, as part of the Ristaan Abadi initiative to support the community, in particular the youths.

“Rather than see them (the discarded tables and chairs) go to the landfill, we thought it would be great to turn them into something meaningful, to give them some new life,” said Shinny Chia, Co-Founder of the Blue Raincoat Collective.

“(This will) hopefully incite them (the children) to be excited about studying as well as making them feel more connected to the people on land,” she added.

Through the 101 Tables project, participants will be able to pick up a table and chair from The Collective Makerspace to take home and upcycle after registering and confirming their involvement in the community giveback project.

Those participating will be given free range to design these desks in time for a free-to-the-public exhibition, showcasing the upcycled sets of tables and chairs which is expected to be held from 1 to 14 March, 2021, before the creations are sent to their new homes in Kg Ayer.

“They are welcome to do anything to the tables. We have (interested) creatives who are looking into painting, some are also looking into structurally altering the tables,” Shinny explained.

“So there is no limit in terms of what you can and cannot do to them, as long as it follows the guidelines of being suitable for use by children,” she added.

Over half of the 101 sets of tables and chairs have already been booked, and the rest are expected to be booked and picked up by this week as participating creatives are given until 28 February to submit their creations.

Under the Ristaan Abadi initiative, the Blue Raincoat Collective in partnership with Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) works toward upskilling and improving the lives of the residents in Kg Bolkiah B, for the long term.
