Royal Brunei Airlines’ (RB) recently launched direct flights to Beijing will benefit the nation’s economy as a catalytic driver that will increase travel, trade and tourism between Brunei Darussalam and China, said the second finance minister.
In a speech during the launch of RB’s direct flights to Beijing, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II YB Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah highlighted how the direct flights can further strengthen the bilateral trade between the two countries.
“With the existence of business engagement platforms that we have across both countries such as the China-ASEAN Expo and the China International Import Expo to name a few,” he said.
The resumption of the Beijing service, he added, makes way for further development in many fields including, but are not limited to, digital economy, e-commerce, foreign direct investments, maritime oil and gas resources, among others.
YB Dato Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew, who is also the Chairman of RB Board of Directors, further said that Brunei has benefitted greatly from good relations with China as they are the sultanate’s largest import partner and its second-largest trading partner after Japan.
“(China and Brunei’s) increasing investments and bilateral trade in areas of mutual interest, has helped to contribute to the transformation of Brunei’s economy,” the minister said.
He noted that Brunei’s bilateral trade with China improved significantly last year, with an 80 percent increase to US$1.8 billion from US$1 billion from the previous year in addition to China being the nation’s largest source market for tourism.
Such advancement paves way for the development of the country, and this remains crucial as Brunei adopts a whole of nation approach towards achieving Wawasan 2035, YB Dato Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew said.
Moreover, the minister lauded the airline’s commitment towards bettering its services to meet the needs of the nation, noting that RB’s investment into developing air connectivity and traffic to Beijing supplements existing bilateral relations between Brunei and China.
Highlighting RB’s recent achievement in being awarded the 4-star airline rating from Skytrax, he believed that the international accreditation is a driver that can push RB’s contribution to the sultanate’s ongoing effort to diversify and build a dynamic economy.
“I am excited for the changes to come, as we embrace new technology and fresh competition in the airline industry. InsyaAllah, this is the right way forward towards Brunei’s Wawasan 2035”.
