Brunei’s largest telecommunications provider DST and Baiduri Bank are set to launch an e-wallet platform nationwide in the second quarter of next year.

An agreement was inked between the companies recently at DST Headquarters that marked the official partnership to create the “largest digital payment ecosystem in Brunei with connectivity to regional and international payment platforms”.

In a joint statement from the telco and the bank, it said that DST users who subscribe to the e-wallet will be able to pay for goods and services using the digital payment feature on their phones both locally and internationally.

The platform will use Near Field Communications (NFC) technology that allows users to pay at card terminals by simply tapping their phones or scanning a QR code.

“Once launched, it will be available to all new and existing DST subscribers and accepted nationwide at over 2,000 Baiduri Bank merchant outlets,” the statement said, adding that the e-wallet can also be linked to a regional payment platform to enable customers to use the e-wallet overseas.

Signing on behalf of DST was Acting Chief Executive Officer Radin Sufri Radin Basiuni while Baiduri Bank was represented by its Chief Executive Officer Ti Eng Hui.

The Acting CEO of DST hoped that the mobile wallet would become a game-changer for both DST and Baiduri Bank in enabling a generation for the Smart Nation.

“We want our customers to be able to enjoy the ease and familiarity of using mobile wallets within both DST’s and Baiduri’s wide reach of merchants,” he said.

DST looks into enhancing the payment experience for their customers collectively and sees a tremendous opportunity to drive the adoption of mobile payments supporting The Nation’s Vision 2035’s push towards a dynamic and sustainable economy.

Radin Sufri added that the partnership also matched DST’s larger road map of transformation, evolving from a telecommunications company into an integrated mobile services provider.

“Using our phones to “shop and go” without having to reach a physical wallet, customers are on the verge of a seamless era. Our goal is to create an intelligent ecosystem for mobile payment and commerce alongside our partners, customers and users”, Radin Sufri continued.

Also present at the event was Deputy CEO of Baiduri Bank Pg Azaleen Pg Dato Hj Mustapha and the management teams of DST and Baiduri Bank.
