Brunei Shell Petroleum Company (BSP) and Shell Exploration and Production Brunei (SEPB) are in the final preparation to drill Merbah Deep-1 and Jagus Subthrust-1 respectively, both located in Brunei deepwater area.
A blessing and doa ceremony for the two exploration wells drilling was held on 25 March 2021 on board the Maersk Viking drillship onsite of Merbah Deep.

Maersk has secured a contract selected to fulfill this year’s drilling commitment for BSP and SEPB through their 7th generation, state-of-the art drillship, Maersk Viking.
The rig arrived in Brunei water on 13 March 2021 where it will begin drilling Merbah Deep-1 well on 26 March 2021 and later for Jagus Subthrust-1 well in early May 2021.

It is equipped with dual-derrick technology capable of reaching 12,000m drilling depth and operated at a maximum water depth of 3,657m.
The drilling exploration activities play an important role in supporting the Ministry of Energy’s second strategic objective of effective and sustainable management of the country’s hydrocarbon resources.

Both exploration wells will form a key test in proving new hydrocarbon volumes and opening up the deepwater further in alignment to the Ministry’s strong emphasis to the operators to develop existing deepwater fields in the near to mid-term.
In attendance at the ceremony were Minister of Energy Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mat Suny Haji Md Hussein; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Interim Managing Director of Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam Haji Azhar Haji Yahya; Managing Director of BSP Agnete Johnsgaard-Lewis; and General Manager of SEPB Ivo Verstralen.
