The local chapter of the Global Shapers Community, a worldwide initiative aimed at empowering youths, kicked off a new term with a curatorship handover last week, with the new term promising to continue its efforts in addressing unemployment issues amongst youths in Brunei.
Global Shapers Community is an initiative by the World Economic Forum back in 2011 and aims to provide young people with a platform to work together to address local, regional, and global challenges in their respective cities.
In his remarks, founding curator Shaun Hoon, highlighted how the Global Shapers Community has grown from strength to strength since its establishment in 2015, attributing it to the collective strength of each “Shaper” who has voluntarily contributed their time and energy.
The Bandar Seri Begawan Hub’s mission is to empower youth employability through capacity-building and development at the grassroots levels.
“I am proud to have been empowered by my very own team of shapers,” said the founding curators.
Aside from transitioning towards a new term, the local chapter also celebrated the Global Shapers Community’s 10th anniversary with the current 2021/2022 curator Syahmi Zulfadhli Abdullah presenting the “Global Shapers Millennial Manifesto, a ratified community guideline outlining the community’s mission and how they approach the issue”.
This was followed by a presentation on the projects carried out by the hun from 2019-2021, which addressed how the pandemic forced the hub to change its approach in regards to project implementation which included the launching of a flagship programme, Skills for the Future.
The programme activities progressed from having small virtual sessions to big physical events and within four phases, the hub had conducted ten workshops and saw over 150 participants in total.
Previous projects were also highlighted during the event such as “Skills for the Future: Cognitive Flexibility” led by Nasri Tahir and Curhat di Bawah Payung.
The event was held at the Dewan Kuliah Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, which saw the attendance of Legislative Council Member Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa Haji Ash’ari and invited members of local NGOs.
Global Shapers BSB is also recruiting youths under 30 years old and for more information, visit their Instagram at @globalshapers.bsb.
