Relentless Entertainment and Academy of Performing Arts is back with its ninth musical production titled “Hairspray”.

The live show will premier this weekend on September 28 at 7.30pm and recommence on September 29 at 1.30pm and 7.30pm at the Jerudong International School (JIS) Arts Centre Theatre.

The Tony Award-winning musical which is set in 1960’s Baltimore, USA is about a girl named Tracy Turnblad.

She is a big girl with big hair and an even a bigger heart who is on a mission to follow her dreams – to dance on the Corny Collins Show.

After auditioning, she successfully won a spot on the show but faced scrutiny and bullying from the racist network producer Velma, and her popular, but vicious, daughter, Amber.

For Relentless, the show’s storyline will be based on social status – a more relatable issue in today’s society, according to the company’s co-founder Amy Cheong.

Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays.

The bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad teaches us all to look past our differences and fight for every human being’s equal rights, Cheong added.

The musical is performed by more than 40 talented cast members ranging from 13 to 52 years old, promising you a fun, entertaining and colorful family event where the audience will be taken on a journey of emotions.

For the past 11 years, Relentless has worked closely with local talents and artists and hopes to develop as well as establish an industry for the vast amount of talents here in Brunei.

The academy is committed to developing and nurturing the passions of the youth in the creative and performing arts.

It also aspires to provide performing artists a safe, inclusive and supportive community that inspires lifelong learning while fostering friendships, creativity, build self-esteem and leadership skills.

Their first musical was an original, “Enchanted Forest The Musical” back in 2013 and two years later produced “Poppins”.

“Musical Mania 2” and “Cinderella The Musical” were also produced in 2018 and earlier this year produced “Musical Mania 3”.
