Hengyi Industries’ refinery in Pulau Muara Besar has begun supplying refined fuel products to the domestic market, providing Brunei Shell Marketing (BSM) more than 420,000 barrels of transportation fuels to meet the monthly domestic demand of petroleum products.

The new milestone is expected to reduce Brunei’s dependency on imported fuel products, while also generating products for export and was officiated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday, held at the Pulau Muara Besar’s (PMB) Gantry Yard, Western Tank Farm.

According to a press statement by Hengyi, the PMB Refinery will be supplying a total of 427,509 barrels of refined fuel products to BSM which consists of 190,778 barrels of gasoline, 159,924 barrels of diesel and 76,807 barrels of A1 jet fuel.

Meanwhile, Hengyi is committed to supplying Euro V fuels to the domestic demand, which are environmentally friendly and provide better performance to motor vehicles, in due time.

“This is part of Hengyi’s commercial agreement with BSM signed on September 19, 2019 to supply the refined fuel products to BSM for domestic market distribution,” read the statement.

It added that the landmark event signified a turning point for the country’s downstream industry, with the extension of the domestic oil and gas value chain.

“The PMB Refinery and Petrochemical Plant is a world-class oil refinery and aromatics complex with the capacity to refine eight million tonnes of crude oil per year (while) the petrochemical plant is capable of producing 13 different types of petroleum products,” the statement continued.

To ensure that quality products will continue to be available to the public, the domestic supply of petroleum products from the PMB and Petrochemical Plant as well as its operations will be overseen by the Ministry of Energy (ME).

Hengyi went on to note that PMB also opens up employment and business opportunities to local workers and businesses, adding that the company has directly employed 447 locals, a figure which will increase in alignment with ME’s Bruneianisation Directive.

Several more indirect employment opportunities have been generated through various contractors and local service providers to support the operation.

The event was jointly officiated by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Second Minister of Finance and Economy YB Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah; Minister of Development YB Dato Seri Setia Ir. Haji Suhaimi Haji Gafar; Minister of Energy YB Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mat Suny Hj Md Hussein; Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong; CEO of Hengyi Chen Lian Cai and Managing Director of BSM Muhammad Norshafiee Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil. – Wardi Wasil
