Lexus announced the world premiere of the all-new NX, designed and engineered to mark the beginning of a new era of luxury.
The all-new 2022 Lexus NX delivers a long list of firsts, including an evolved design language along with the brand’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain.
As part of the “Lexus Electrified” vision, the new Lexus NX is expected to usher the brand’s vision that aims to introduce new and improved electrified models by 2025.
The first NX was introduced in 2014, based on the concept of “Premium Urban Sports Gear.”
Since then, the luxury crossover has been well-received for its agile driving performance and sleek, distinctive design. Nearly one million units of the NX have been sold in more than 90 countries and regions.
The 2022 NX is the first model to introduce the next generation of Lexus and is based on the development concept of “Vital x Tech Gear.” This concept combines vital dynamism (Vital) with advanced technology (Tech).
It is equipped with innovative hybrid powertrains that help contribute to a carbon-neutral society while adapting advanced technologies and safety features.
“The development of the new NX was a series of new challenges for Lexus. We implemented the ‘digital development’ to ensure quality by evaluating the well-thought design structure under various conditions using computer models to check productivity,” said Lexus International Chief Engineer Takeaki Kato.
A design that signifies the future: exterior and interior
The design of the all-new Lexus NX exudes the perfect blend of athleticism and luxury, captivating from every side with its dynamic framework that has been realised through an all-new vehicle platform.
According to Lexus, the design took inspiration from the LF-Z Electrified concept model that was unveiled in March.
The evolutionary design language incorporates sharper lines and creases – noticeably more sculpted than its predecessor.
In front, the all-new NX makes a bold statement with its refreshed and refined interpretation of Lexus’s signature spindle grille.
The new spindle design is made up of U-shaped blocks giving it that 3D appearance and depth. This striking front fascia is further emphasised by slimmer headlights with integrated L-shaped daytime running light.
At the rear, the Lexus NX is the first model to replace it’s signature ‘L’ emblem with a clean and unified ‘LEXUS’ lettering on the tailgate.
Moreover, the rear also features a new elongated light bar that runs across the width connecting the L-shaped tail lamps giving the NX a more futuristic look.
Inside, every component in the Lexus NX has been meticulously designed to deliver a more seamless and intuitive connection between the driver and car to help enhance concentration on driving.
The all-new NX’s interior is the first to fully incorporate the Tazuna Concept, a cockpit concept that allows the driver to intuitively connect with the car and concentrate more on driving operations.
Aside from easy-to-spot high-quality materials, the new NX displays a wraparound dashboard dominated by an intuitive 14-inch infotainment system.
Moreover, the layout of the entire screen is divided into display areas according to the granularity of the information, while the operation flow for navigation, music, and vehicle settings is unified for ease of use.
The centre console and layout has a clean design and accessibility making it easier for the drivers to be connected and to be in control.
With generous dimensions for all passengers, it benefits from the highest level of technology aiming to ensure a modern and global approach of comfort which includes Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, 64-color ambient interior lighting, a 10-speaker sound system and more.
Other features include the latest voice-recognition function enables activation via voice commands by saying a pre-defined activation word (e.g. Hey Lexus!).
A new platform
In terms of dimension, the latest Lexus NX rides on an all-new platform, the GA-K platform (TNGA-K) providing a bigger body and larger interior space.
The new NX measures 4,660 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width and 1,640 mm in height and has a 30 mm longer wheelbase which stands at 2,690 mm.
In terms of space, the latest platform offers more headroom, legroom and cargo space.
The GA-K platform features a lower center of gravity as well as improving the driving dynamics of the latest NX.
Under the hood and safety features
Under the hood, the all-new NX will be available as both a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and a Lexus’ first, a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV).
On top of that, the next-gen NX will also offer an assortment of different powertrain including a newly developed 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine, and a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine – all with high thermal efficiency.
In addition, all-wheel drive (AWD) will be available on PHEV and 2.4-liter turbo powertrain models, whilst both AWD and front-wheel drive (FWD) will be available on HEV and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated powertrain models.
When it comes to safety, the Japanese automaker is ahead of the game. The all-new NX comes with the evolved and comprehensive Lexus Safety System+ package setting a new benchmark for accident risk detection and prevention measures.
Notable safety features include Pre-Crash Safety, Radar Cruise Control (with All-Speed Follow function), Lane Departure Alert, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Proactive Driving Assist and more.
One of the highlighted safety feature includes the E-Latch System that replaces the latch and unlatch mechanism of the door with electrical control by switches delivers a smooth door operation and effortless feeling.
