Three local archers from the Brunei Darussalam Archery Association left for Las Vegas yesterday to compete in The Vegas Shoot 2020, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournaments.

The three-day event will be held from February 7 until 9 and will see Pg Md Afwi Pg Hj Bakar and Md Nasrullah Nassaruddin competing in the Championship Recurve Male category while Md Shah Rezza Nassaruddin for the Compound Flights category.

Md Afwi told local media in an interview that although BDAA has taken part in several regional competitions held in Singapore and Malaysia, the Vegas Shoot 2020 will be their first time competing against a massive pool of archers from around the world.

The competition which will be held at South Point Hotel is expected to see about 4,000 participants with last year’s tournament amassing a record 3,767 competitors, including top world archers and Olympic champions.

“This stage (The Vegas Shoot 2020) will be a challenging one for us, but we will try our best to relish the competition because (besides the tournament) we are hoping to link with other professional archers, to learn and (gain) experience through that network,” said the 32-year-old.

For BDAA member Md Shah Rezza, he said that their participation in the Vegas Shoot 2020 is a “dream come true” hoping that it would set an example for other aspiring archers to stay committed to their craft and strengthen their skills.

He further highlighted that the lack of representation of Bruneian archers is one of his reasons for competing in the Vegas Shoot 2020, meant in part as a showcase of what local archers are capable of doing.

“One of the biggest challenges I guess would be our lack of experience. It’s expected that our international counterparts would have the advantage in that aspect (but) we’re competing to win,” he said.

Md Shah Rezza also said that as a Bruneian archer, he aspires to reach the level of proficiency where he will be able to represent the country in world archery tournaments as a professional archer.

Partly sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines, the airline proceeded to express their support in any new emerging sports in Brunei that will improve any Bruneian youth to compete and develop their expertise and skills in an international arena.
