The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) through the Forestry Department along with the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS) recently launched the Brunei Darussalam Conference on Forest held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

The two-day conference, held from 11 until 12 June 2021, held the theme “Forests and Biodiversity: Unveiling Its Economic Potential” which was aimed at exploring the opportunities for green economic growth through the commercialisation of forest biodiversity.

“It aims to create R&D opportunities in the field of forestry, biodiversity and conservation, and act as a platform to share information,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that various research papers from local and international researchers will be presented during the conference.

The conference was divided into three thematic topics including; “Biodiversity and Economy”, “Green Economy for Sustainable Future and “Research Opportunities: Economic Diversification and Protection”.

Present as the guest of honour at the event was MPRT Minister Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Hj Ali Apong who also kicked off the conference with a keynote address where he discussed the connection between forest and biodiversity and economy, specifically the green economy.

Several presentations and discussions followed suit including Dr Wong Koon Meng from the Singapore Botanic Garden in his keynote address titled “Economic, Endemic, Environment: Brunei Context”.

This was then followed by presentations delivered by senior officials notably by the Permanent Secretary at MPRT Hjh Tutiaty Hj Abd Wahab titled “Managing Forest Biodiversity for Its Economic Value Brunei Darussalam’s Perspective” and the Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) at the Ministry of Development, Dr Nor Imtihan Hj Abd Razak. 

Dr Nor Imtihan discussed the government’s effort in combating climate change through her presentation titled “Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP) – Towards a Resilient and Sustainable Future”. 

Meanwhile, Director of Forestry at MPRT, Noralinda Hj Ibrahim shared on Brunei’s forestry sector in supporting and adopting green economy through her presentation titled “Brunei Forestry Sector: In Support to Green Economy”.

An exhibition named ‘Green Space’ was also officiated by the MPRT Minister along with the Minister of Development, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Ir Hj Suhaimi Hj Gafar, where the participants consisted of the BCCS, the Forestry Department and local timber downstream companies. 

The exhibition also included the ‘Nurture the Nature for our Future’ showcase which promoted various products and services derived from the forestry sector while also promoting awareness amongst members of the public on the importance of conserving the forest for future generations. 

The Brunei Darussalam Conference on Forests is part of the Brunei MYCE 2021 which is an initiative by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism to attract and strengthen the meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) market.
