Social enterprise Projek Bina Ukhwah (PBU) has successfully distributed donations to 180 underprivileged families across all four districts of the sultanate under their annual charitable initiative, Jelajah Ramadhan 5.0.
A yearly project conducted by PBU, the Jelajah Ramadhan is now in its fifth year and is an initiative aimed to assist underprivileged families in Brunei Darussalam through in-kind donations such as basic life necessities for their preparations during Ramadhan as well as new or secondhand furniture and electrical appliances for their celebration of Eid.
An important aspect of the initiative was to motivate members of the public to be more active in their contributions toward the local economy as well as the community, and part and parcel of that were to encourage them to purchase basic necessities from PBU’s many retail collaborators.
These collaborators include TM Majeed Supermarket, Derimba Department Store, Fayze Department Store Salambigar, Bruneihalalfoods (Ghanim International Corporation), Syarikat Labisah, Syarikat Halimun Bersaudara, Freshco Brunei, Orbit Supermarket and Atlanta Supermarket.
The purchased items were collected from a ‘Ramadhan Basket’ which was provided at each retailer last month and overall, the project attracted more than 100 volunteers to assist in the collection, packaging and distributions of the donated items.
The donations were presented to over 180 families, and was conducted for four consecutive days where the recipients consisted of families registered under the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) and the Department of Community Development (JAPEM).
“This year’s expedition is to raise awareness to the public that there is still a number of families that do not possess the same privilege as us and to instill teh sense of compassiona and responsibility in ourselves to those in need,” said Jaini Hj Jumat, the Project Manager of Jeajah Ramadhan 5.0.
This year, Progresif became the gold sponsor of the initiative with the contributed amount of $3,000 and an additional $830 worth of donations from Progresif staff.
“Progresif would like to convey our heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to participate in Projek Bina Ukhwah’s Jelajah Ramadhan 5.0. We salute their willingness to give so freely of their time and the sincerity with which their youthful organisers run this project to help those in need,” said Amilin Mat Sah from Progresif’s CSR department.
“We’re proud to include that Progresif also launched an internal volunteerism program encouraging all staff to be active participating in programs such as Jelajah Ramadhan and any other NGOs. Alhamdulillah, close to 40 volunteers from Progresif participated in this program and we hope to keep it growing,” he added.
Meanwhile, the silver sponsors for this year’s Jelajah Ramadhan include CarPro Brunei, Readymix Concrete, Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology, Liverpool Supporters Club Brunei and DCH Auriga (Borneo).
