As the appetite for healthy food continues to grow in the sultanate, local grab-and-go eatery, Roots recently opened its second branch in the heart of Berakas.
Now, lunch-goers and health-enthusiast in the area can finally get a taste of their signature grab-and-go sandwiches and meals which ingredients you can choose from a variety of options.
The homegrown brand made its debut in Gadong last year and gained positive reception by the public, thanks to its fresh-from-home approach and a healthy menu that still offers familiar home-cooked flavours.
Strategic new location
Located on the first floor of the Brunei Tennis Club in Berakas, it is almost impossible to miss their signature pastel green sign.
Owner of the eatery, Dilys Chai said that the restaurant’s second location comes after they noticed the strategic location near the Berakas Sports Complex and Hybrid Movement Gym just next to the eatery.
The arterial area of Berakas is characterised by retail, restaurants and residential, also offering ample parking space and easy accessibility for customers.
The new location is bigger than the first branch, accommodating about 40 to 50 diners.
However, with the ongoing pandemic, the eatery limits options to takeout and offer delivery only.
“Amidst all that is happening, we have decided to open up Roots’ second branch to provide wholesome foods to nourish your body that is convenient for takeaway,” said Chai.
Dashing interior with hearty meals
Upon entering the eatery, your eyes are instantly met with the eatery’s signature quote “Never Forget Your Roots”, beautifully spreading across the exposed brick walls.
Inspired by natural elements, the airy interior of the gorgeous green-hued outlet is basked in bright natural lighting and impeccably decorated with lush foliage draped across the ceiling, giving the eatery a refreshing and calming feel inside.
Roots offers patrons with recipes from the Chai family heritage, from Mama Chai’s popular style black fungus and baked eggs, that is full of nostalgic flavours.
Their build-your-own-Roots bowl provides six main steps; pick your protein, then your base, and add a bunch of sides for a fulfilling meal.
Customers can customise their creations with proteins such as their juicy grilled chicken thigh, their flavourful pulled beef, salmon, or tempeh and tofu for a vegetarian option.
Whereas, for the base, customers will get to choose from healthy yet hearty options such as cauliflower rice, super greens, coconut brown rice and gluten-free pasta, among others.
“It is very important to take care of ourselves (physically and mentality) to try and eat a well-balanced healthy meal, exercise regularly, have good quality sleep and drink plenty of water. Eating a variety of proteins, carbs and high quality omega-3 fatty acids will provide the body with the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs,” explained Chai.
For Chai, her parents are her greatest influence and also the reason behind the expansion.
She further expressed that Roots sees a lot of potential and growing trend for a healthier lifestyle in the country and is excited about the prospect of expanding their healthy home-cooked menu to clients craving for nutrition and convenience.
