Brunei’s own non-profit drama group Seeds Brunei will be performing ‘Mystery of the Opera’ to celebrate its 10th anniversary – also in conjunction with the sultanate’s upcoming December Festival.

The musical stage show will be performed over four shows starting November 29 to December 1 at Dewan Di-Gadong of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Headquarters at Jalan Kebangsaan.

‘Mystery of the Opera’ is a theatrical performance based on the longest running Broadway musical ‘Phantom of the Opera’ which follows the trials of the Paris Opera House staged in the late 1880s.

The Opera House was troubled by the mystery and tragedy of the character known as the ‘Phantom’. Unloved, ridiculed and cast out from birth because of his disfigured face. the orphaned Erik ‘The Phantom’ had hidden himself in the basement of the Paris Opera House.

Having worked for years in fairs and circuses across Europe and Asia, he composes songs and plays for the Paris Opera House. He was then dubbed ‘The Unseen Genius’.

The stage production is the 10th performance by Seeds Brunei following “Seuss!” based on the world of Dr. Seuss, “SEEDS Wicked Witch”, “SEEDS’ Willy Wonka”, “Into the Woods”, “Oliver! The Musical” and last year’s “The Corny Collins Show” based on “Hairspray”.

Seeds Brunei is recognised as an educational society led by volunteers with the support of the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education, and uses theatre and other creative activities as an educational tool for students in secondary schools and higher institutions.

The performance is the culmination of a year-long process by Seeds Brunei in a series of workshops which emphasises the holistic acquisition of all theatrical skills in every aspect of the production.

Besides MCYS and the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), the stage show is also supported Del Mar Virtuoso Music School, DD-Gmin Bridal Gallery and Tailoring, Koleksi Jerahmasie, and Sri Nirwana Sound and Lighting Management.

Tickets for any of the four shows can be obtained at Dewan Di-Gadong at $25 each. Members of the public can reach Seeds Brunei via its Instagram account @seedsbrunei, email seedsbrunei@gmail.com or contact its hotline 8394464 for more information about the show.
