Customers can now use their smartphones to pay for their refuels and other purchases at the sultanate’s one and only self-service petrol stop, the Roxana Fuel Station located in Seria, Belait.
Brunei Shell Marketing (BSM) recently had BIBD QuickPay and Progresif Pay installed at the station, allowing customers to pay for goods and services just by scanning the designated QR-codes displayed over payment terminals.
Customers however are only allowed to purchase refills over the counter inside the station’s convenience store as the use of mobile phones is still prohibited nearby fuel pumps.
BSM, BIBD, and Progresif plan to extend the mobile payment services to all filling stations nationwide, coming 2020.
The new cashless payment option also aimed to mitigate risks relating to cash handling tasks at stations, besides providing convenience for employees throughout their daily tasks.
While the system is currently limited only to over-the-counter transactions, the three companies have plans to introduce alternative solutions for customers to pay without having to walk far from their cars.
These solutions may include QR-code stickers or an RFID (radio frequency identification) device that allows payments to be made through designated scans – but discussions are still underway and have yet to be finalised.
To date, there are close to 400 BIBD QuickPay merchants serving over 150,000 BIBD mobile banking users.
