The 2020 Toyota Fortuner ticks all the right boxes for a powerful and reliable Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that is capable to perform steadily on-road and off-road terrains.

The Japanese brand, which is exclusively distributed by NBT Brunei, is the definition of tough meets gorgeous – captivating inside out, making it one of the best-selling favourite SUVs in the local market.

The SUV which is available in Pre-Runner 2WD 2.4L and Fortuner 4WD 2.8L variants, exudes solid characteristics that withstand any driving experience, just like its tagline ‘Command and Conquer’.

Both models are powered by a four-cylinder, 16 valve DOHC diesel turbo engine, delivering a 400 to 450Nm of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission.

On the outside, both variants command attention with its frontal look; a front panel with a sturdy bumper section and a slender upper grille that provides a contrast between strength and elegance.

They almost look similar but the 4WD 2.8L has more modish details such as the advanced lighting technology for Hi and Low Beam usage as well as stylishly designed rear lamps that complement to its tougher backside.

The sturdy Fortuner has a universal appeal to many; the clean lines and smooth features all-around with slim lights in the front and rear as well as 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The sleek and rugged large rims are an added touch to its tough exterior which allows you to conquer any terrain in style.

Both variants have a reverse camera located just underneath the backdoor handle. This feature gives the driver a heightened awareness of the car surrounding which supports smooth reversing operations when parking at 90-degree angle or parallel parking by showing the rear view taken by the camera.

For 4WD 2.8L owners, the loading and unloading of things into the car trunk are made safe and easy with the power back door feature. 

The jam-proof back door opens and closes by remote control and can also be closed by a switch on the lower end of the back door.

Spacious cabin

The seven-seater Fortuner puts passengers comfort in mind. Its cabin is spacious in the front, middle and back – a perfect family SUV made for a long road trip.

The 2WD 2.4L and 4WD 2.8L are adorned in hand-stitched fabric and leather seats, respectively. The latter’s front row seats are equipped with a cooling and heating ventilation system.

Moreover, the highly efficient system of the SUV maintains a comfortable cabin temperature and at the same time contributes to the excellent fuel economy.

Toyota lets you stay connected wherever you go with the SUV via its 8-inch touch screen infotainment where you can seamlessly transit from your mobile device to your car, allowing you to access music, navigate route and answer phone calls.

For the driver, the SUV’s multi-information display is kind for the navigating eyes with its easy-to-read metres and a 4.2-inch colour Thin Film Transistor (TFT) multi-information display that gives vital vehicle information.

Should you need to have more space for cargo, the second-row seats can be easily folded with a one-touch tumble function, giving access to the third-row seats which can also be folded using easy-to-reach fixed hooks.

The car doors of the 4WD 2.8L can be opened and locked without a key which is via the smart entry and smart system.

To open and lock the doors, one needs to carry the smart key and simply push the front door handle switch.

What’s even better, the 4WD 2.8L can be started by simply pressing the brake pedal and pushing the start engine switch.

Safety features and Toyota Safety Sense

The 4×4 Fortuner is built robust to the core; it is powered by advanced off-road driving technologies for outstanding rough terrain capabilities.

Both models have standard safety features such as Anti-Lock Braking System, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist System (HAC), 7 Airbags and 6 Clearance and Back Sonar, although the 4WD has more.

The HAC system helps the driver maintain control on steep inclines and prevents wheels from locking to keep the vehicle from rolling backwards.

The Fortuner is equipped with driver airbag, front passenger airbag, driver knee airbag, front seats airbag, front and rear seats curtain shield airbags.

Not just the airbags, the new Fortuner has a crash safety body that is composed of a high integrity cabin with front and rear crumple zones that help absorb impact energy in a collision.

Meanwhile, the 4WD has the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise System, Active Control Traction System and Easy 4×4 Switch.

The Active Control Traction System activates the moment the risk of wheel spin is detected to help enhance the ability to grip the road and maintaining traction.

The 4×4 switch allows a part-time transfer of the gears. The gear ratios were optimised to help maximise the engine’s potential with excellent low-speed torque and outstanding fuel economy.
