Two local education institutions were awarded the 2019 Foreign Minister’s Commendation recently for their outstanding achievements in international fields.
The awards from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Japan were presented by the Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Eiji Yamamoto to the Language Centre of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Institute of Brunei Technical Education Continuing Education and Training (IBTE CET) on separate occasions at the ambassador’s residence in Kg Sg Tilong.
The first commendation was presented to the Acting Director of UBD’s Language Centre Suciyati Hj Sulaiman last week who thanked the ambassador and MOFA Japan for the prestigious award.
“We are committed to continuing activities to strengthen bilateral relations,” she said.
Over the years, the university’s Language Centre has offered a Japanese language course, operated as a Japanese Language Proficiency Test provider and participated as co-organisers of Japanese speech contests.
Meanwhile on Monday, another award was presented to IBTE CET’s Divisional Director Sumardi Hj Abdul Hamid who noted the award as a huge achievement and milestone for the institution.
“Thank you Ambassador and MOFA Japan for the award… I would also like to thank our instructors who made this possible through their hard work in promoting the Japanese language and culture to the public,” he said.
For several years, IBTE CET has shown support in implementing and spreading Japanese education not only through opening Japanese Language courses but additionally through activities that introduce the Japanese culture related to business, among others.
Furthermore, since 1987, the IBTE CET has co-organised Japanese speech contests and participates in the Embassy of Japan’s “Japanese Language and Culture Week” annually.
The ambassador congratulated and expressed his gratitude to the institutions for promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Brunei and Japan.
Acknowledging the difficulties of learning a foreign language outside of the native speaking country, he commends individuals with the perseverance to continue learning despite the challenges.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas.
Additionally, the award aims to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
This year, the commendations will be awarded to 206 individuals and 63 groups, read a press statement from the embassy.
