The initiative, which overall project administrator is Startup Brunei and managed by An-Nur Harapan, specially caters to individuals residing in Brunei aged 16 and above who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or any other developmental disorders.
At the press conference, the project manager for UnikLearn Rasyidah Samah, said that the purpose of the training is to help the individuals overcome the challenges in learning, interpreting social cues, teamwork and multi-tasking skills.
“Individuals with autism are highly-skilled but they face challenges in finding employment. They face challenges in communication and social awareness which makes it difficult for them in a potential workplace,” she said.
At UnikLearn, students who have undergone assessment will enter the training phase under the provision of professional therapists and supervisors.
Once they completed the three-month training phase, trainees will be placed in work placement under the Unikkone pop ups having its base in Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd headquarters.
Unikkone is a premium brand ice-cream that is produced specially for UnikLearn’s individuals with autism where they will be front liners serving and selling ice cream at pop ups.
The pilot project hopes to empower special needs individuals by equipping them with the necessary set skills for them to lead meaningful lives.
