Four cyclists from Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB’s) Cycling Team managed to be in the top 10 fastest racer in the latest reiteration of the Varsity Cycling Challenge (VCC), which was held recently in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).
Dr Fahmi Ibrahim who led a seven-man contingent from UTB finished second in the race which was hosted on a 40km track around the university’s campus. He was few distance away from champion Dr Mohd Fakhrurrazi Ishak of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) who had better hill cycling maneuvers.
His teammates Hamdani Hj Ibrahim, Zainidi Hj Hamid and Dr Hj Khairul Jaafar Masri finished eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively; while Dr Ahmand Syamaizar Ahmad Sabli and Osman Hj Suhaile finished 12th and 13th.
Another team member Syazwi Azhar Hairolrani had to forfeit the challenge as his bicycle tyre got punctured half-way into the race.
Zainidi who is in VCC for the third time in a statement said that the latest scoreboard demonstrated the team’s improvements compared to the last year.
“Nevertheless, the result showed the team did quite well and lot of improvement than previous year considering the level of the race which is quite competitive,” he said.
“In terms of race speed it was quite fast than last year, I think because of the riders who made the race and well prepared this time around,” he added.
In view of achieving academic excellence and ratings in the region, sport activities and success can be mechanisms to put UTB in the map, Dr Fahmi said.
He added that the team is also planning to return next year with better training and preparations as well as more participation from staff members.
More than 200 participants from various universities including Univeristi Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) and Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
